About

The Department of Chemistry is one of the biggest departments of Government of Maharashtra’s Ismail Yusuf College Jogeshwari (E), Mumbai. It was established in 1930 and since then we are running undergraduate programme in chemistry. Subsequently in 1961 we started postgraduate courses in three different specializations, Organic, Inorganic and Physical chemistry. We also have Ph.D research center in chemistry. The chemistry department has a rich tradition of imparting high-quality teaching and inculcating research attitude in both undergraduate and postgraduate students. The faculty of departments are well qualified, and motivated with a strong commitment to teaching and research. We also provide intensive research training to students and hands-on training of sophisticated instruments to both undergraduate and postgraduate students. Chemistry department have high quality instrumentation facility (GCMS, TG-DTA, DSC, IR, NMR) and laboratory infrastructure for conducting quality research. The department also organized workshops, symposia, and national and international conferences in collaboration with other departments of college. Our postgraduate student regularly passes exams like SET, NET and GATE and also gets selected to work in industry.

The Department of Chemistry strives for excellence in all aspects of teaching and research, to enable general science students in reach with high qualities required in industries, academic, research organizations and to serve the society at national and international standards.

Mission

  • To maintain the programs of excellence in the areas of education, research.
  • To promote, inspire and nurture the fundamentals of chemistry through UG and PG courses offered by Mumbai University for the basic sciences students.
  • To train M.Sc. chemistry students for research through practical and research projects with high emphasis to convert chemists into productive scientists, excellent teachers, entrepreneurs and innovative independent researchers.

Goal

To pioneer innovative research methodologies and foster interdisciplinary collaborations, advancing the frontiers of chemical knowledge while nurturing a diverse and inclusive community of scholars and practitioners.
